In Puisalicon, a small medieval village of the Languedoc in the south of France, the three Delhon brothers, Pierre, Henri and Louis, run the family estate, Domaine Bassac, with real passion and commitment.
Situated, between the three towns of Béziers, Pézénas and Bédarieux, the Bassac vineyards cover some 60 hectares (150 acres) with a range of soil types around Puisalicon and the neighbouring village of Thézan-les-Béziers.
By taking into account the specific nature of the individual terroir – a combination of climate, soil and situation – each grape variety is planted in the vineyard that suits it best. As a result, the mix of varieties at Bassac is varied and original which enables us to make a broad range of wines :
The white wines are made from:
- – Sauvignon, Muscat, & Chardonnay
The red wines:
- – Carignan, Grenache, Cinsault, Tempranillo, Syrah, Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc &Merlot.
Because of our commitment to producing authentic wines that reflect their terroir and because we work with a respect for nature and for the subtle balance that alone enables the vine to grow in secret harmony with its soil, we have chosen to cultivate our vineyards organically :
– compost and organic fertilisers to nourish the soil
– self-seeded ground cover in autumn and winter
– ploughing and manual weeding in spring and summer
– vine and crop treatment with natural products
– biological control of berry moth larvae.
Our cellars, situated in the heart of Puisalicon itself, are housed in a traditional building that has been expanded through the generations and continues to be adapted. In fact, many years ago, when the Languedoc was renowned for producing “eau-de-vie”, there was a family distillery on the premises…
At harvest-time, by handling the grapes with great care and using a judicious combination of modern winemaking methods combined with our traditional skills, we get the very best out of each grape variety and each vineyard, optimising the vintage’s potential.
Throughout the year the wines are kept with the utmost care. Blended, racked and clarified, they are then bottled on the estate using our own equipment.
When the wines from Domaine Bassac embody that special balance which allows for the full expression of terroir and the vine, along with the men and women involved, to really achieve their fullest expression then we are very happy… to have you taste our wines, to share our passion and commitment with you.
