Italy and Spain Dominate the 50 Great Red Wines of the World 2024 Competition
Italy and Spain shone in our two-day annual blind tasting to determine the 50 Great Red Wines of the World 2024. Italy led the rankings, with three Barolos each scoring an impressive 98 points, and eight additional entries from Italy achieving 95+ points. Spain rounded out the gold medal winners with notable entries from Montsant, Ribera del Duero, and Utiel-Requeña.
Silver Medal Winners Showcase Diverse Regions
The silver medal winners (90-94 points) were also dominated by Italy and Spain, with contributions from Austria, France, and South Africa adding an intriguing blend to the final awards.
Judging Criteria and Tasting Conditions
Wines were judged based on barrel aging and sugar levels. A total of 103 wines were sampled, priced between €9 and €360. To ensure fairness, wines were tasted within their categories without revealing prices or regions.
Standout Wines of the Tasting
Our team of judges was particularly impressed with the Barolo DOCG Paiagallo by Casa E. di Mirafiore and Peraj Ha´abib 2022 by Celler de Capçanes, both earning 98 points.
