After tasting and rating over 200 sparkling wines from around the world and assessing them on harmony, complexity, and the memorable factor, our team of judges compiled, according to method of production the top 50.
2023 showed again real diversity, both geographically and stylistically. As in previous editions of the competiton (now in it’s 12th year) Italy and Portugal appear with numerous wines amongst the the top 50. Impressive bubblies also amongst the top 50 are from Australia, Belgium, England, France, Moldova and Spain.
Over two enjoyable days I was joined by Santiago Fernandez (Wine Journalist & wine buyer), Paulo Huidobro (Enologist and Wine Sales Manager), George H. Potter (Wine Writer & author of the book ‘CAVA, Spain’s Effervescent Treasure’ ), Juan Manuel Gonzalvo (Enologist and Sommelier) to taste through the competition entries which were classified acccording to method of production, dosage, and in the case of the traditional method, ageing on the lees. Grape varieties and vintage was also made known to the judges.
This year 17 wines received a Gold medal (95 points or more) and as you might expect most only available at select specialist retailers rather than a large supermarket.
